World Championship Points for Van Der Mierden in Assen

Sven van der Mierden of the Husqvarna SKS team collected some world championship points at the Dutch GP at Assen. He finished 18th and 20th in the heats respectively, adding four points to his world championship tally.

Bad weather leading up to the race presented the riders with a swamped circuit upon their arrival. Fortunately, the rain stopped by Saturday noon, and the track workers performed gigantic work to prepare a drier circuit. Sven posted the 18th fastest time in qualifying practice after a number of attempts. A bad start in the qualifying race held him back, dropping him outside the top twenty. He fought back strongly to qualify 15th.
Sven's starting woes continued in the first race on Sunday, and this made it difficult for him to get into a rhythm. Once he had overcome that, he worked himself into a group of riders, enabling him to make a number of passes. He kept a steady pace, and was rewarded with 18th position, opening his day with some points.
In the second race, Sven got caught up in the start corner melee, and did not ride as he would have liked to. He recovered in the second part of the race, and finished 20th, for another world championship point.
Sven was 21st overall for the day. He will line up for action at the next round of the Open Dutch Championship in Markelo next weekend.
